    WOO HOO!!! The Democrats won!

    Or did we?

Did we really elect government officials that will carry out the will of the people that elected them? Do you really think that things will change now that the Republicans are no longer the majority party? Ask yourself why people run for office. Consider the money that is thrown at these people by big business to pass legislation favorable to them. Consider the inside information they have when buying stocks that coincidentally shoot through the roof after handing out government contracts to the very same companies they purchased stock from. Consider that they would have never made it to where they are without making all the deals they have. Even the most principled politicians are tested the higher they rise as everyone takes bits and pieces of him. By the time one is in a position of power, they don’t know what they believe in anymore.

The fault, however, is not entirely upon our elected officials. So many of us think that the Democrats will automatically right everything that has gone wrong with the country. One of the problems with this theory is that our congressmen and senators do not know what is important to us. Why? Because WE DO NOT TELL THEM! How many of these public officials have come from anything other than rich money-grubbing families? How many know what it is like to worry about putting food on the table? How are these people supposed to know what matters to us when they cannot relate those who voted them in? These same Democratic lame ducks will think it’s okay for them to sit in their ivory towers as long as nobody has a complaint. One of the worst things we can do is stop now that we have turned the tide a little. Changing congress and the senate is one part of the equation. The other is making sure that those that represent us know what is on our mind.

Write your congressman and tell them what matters to you, whether it is the war, abortion, underfunded schools, etc. Let them know why we chose them. We must be a part in creating checks and balances. Otherwise the results of the last mid-term election won’t mean a thing.
